Overview
The NYSC Orientation Camp is a mandatory three-week program where all prospective corps members (PCMs) begin their service year. Proper preparation for camp begins with packing the right items. Having the correct documents and personal belongings ensures a smooth registration process and a comfortable stay.
Many first-timers make the mistake of under-packing or over-packing. The key is to know what is compulsory, what is necessary, and what is optional.
1. Essential Documents (Most Important!)
Without these, you cannot be registered in camp:
-
NYSC Call-up Letter (original + 6 photocopies).
-
Green Slip (NYSC Registration Printout).
-
Statement of Result/Certificate (original + photocopies).
-
School ID Card.
-
Valid Government ID (e.g., National ID, International Passport, Driver’s License, Voter’s Card).
-
Passport Photographs (8–12 copies, white background recommended).
-
Medical Fitness Certificate from a government-approved hospital.
📌 Tip: Keep all documents in a transparent, waterproof file jacket to prevent loss or damage.
2. Clothing and Footwear
You’ll wear mostly white during camp. Pack enough to last you:
-
White T-shirts (3–5 pieces).
-
White shorts (2–3 pairs).
-
White sneakers (1–2 pairs, comfortable for drills).
-
White socks (at least 4–6 pairs).
-

-
Casual clothes for Sundays/social nights.
-
A sweater or jacket (for cold mornings).
-
Slippers/sandals for hostel and bathroom use.

Blanket or wrapper.
-
Bucket, bowl, and bathing slippers.

4. Medical and Health Items
-
Prescribed personal medications (if any).
-
First aid basics: paracetamol, multivitamins, antiseptic cream, bandages, plasters.
-
Hand sanitizer and disinfectant wipes.
-
Sunscreen or umbrella (for hot/sunny states).
5. Other Useful Items

-
Waist pouch or small bag (to keep documents and money safe).
-
Stationery (pen, notebook for camp lectures).
-
Water bottle/flask.
-
Snacks/provisions (beverages, garri, biscuits, groundnuts).
6. Items NOT Allowed
The following are prohibited in camp:
-
Cooking stoves, gas cylinders, or electric cookers.
-
Knives, weapons, or sharp objects.
-
Hard drugs, alcohol, or illicit substances.
-
Expensive jewelry or unnecessary valuables.
Summary
Packing right is the first step toward a smooth NYSC experience. Documents are the most critical items—without them, you won’t even be registered. Clothing, toiletries, and personal items are for your comfort and convenience. Avoid over-packing or bringing prohibited items.
In short: Pack smart, pack light, and prioritize your documents.
