About the ILSA UI Essay Competition

The first edition of the ILSA UI Essay Competition focuses on the theme:
“The Legality of Unilateral Economic Sanctions in International Law.”

Participants are expected to analyse the legal basis, global impact, and debates around the use of economic sanctions by single states without multilateral approval. The topic encourages critical thinking about international relations, trade, and human rights through a legal lens.

Who Can Participate

The competition is open to all students currently studying in any accredited tertiary institution in Nigeria. Whether in a university, polytechnic, or college of law, every eligible student can apply.

Prizes for Winners

The top three essays will receive cash awards as follows:

  • First Prize: ₦200,000
  • Second Prize: ₦120,000
  • Third Prize: ₦80,000

These rewards aim to encourage academic excellence and promote deeper interest in international law among students.
