Overview
Participation in the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) is not automatic for every graduate in Nigeria. The scheme was designed for a specific group of young Nigerians, and as such, certain eligibility criteria determine who must serve, who can be exempted, and who is completely excluded.
This lesson highlights the categories of graduates eligible for service, those who may be exempted, and the requirements for mobilization.
Who is Eligible for NYSC?

Graduates of Nigerian Universities and Polytechnics

Those with national honors.
-
-
-

Such individuals receive an Exclusion Letter instead of a Certificate of National Service.
-
Significance of Eligibility Criteria
-
Ensures that the scheme targets the youthful population, which has the energy and capacity to contribute to nation-building.
-
Prevents abuse of the program by ineligible individuals.
-
Provides alternatives (exemption or exclusion) for graduates who cannot serve due to age, program type, or other factors.
In summary, the NYSC eligibility criteria ensure that the scheme fulfills its purpose of mobilizing young Nigerian graduates for national unity and development. While not every graduate must serve, the system of mobilization, exemption, and exclusion provides a fair framework for all categories of graduates.
