Rector Cares 2024 Essay competition for SS1 and SS2 students is currently ongoing

This is a call for application for SS1 and SS2 students  who are passionate about water conservation and environmental sustainability.

You are invited to join the Rector Cares Foundation School Essay WASH (water, sanitation and hygiene) Competition and share your innovative ideas for addressing Lagos’ water challenges.

CONTEST RULES

  3. Completed manuscripts and accompanying documents must be submitted to www.ncdmbessay.ng on or before 14th October, 2024. Late manuscripts will not be accepted. Applicants are to register HERE to submit their essay.
  4. Entrants must submit either a letter of admission or a signed letter of attestation from his/her Head of Department (HOD).
  5. All essays must be original works specifically written for the competition.
  6. Co-authorship of essay is not permitted.
  7. Entrants are to submit only one entry.
  8. Manuscripts must not exceed 1,500 WORDS.
  9. Current contact information of each entrant including phone number and email address MUST ACCOMPANY THE MANUSCRIPT, IN THE PROVIDED ESSAY SUBMISSION FORM WHEN LOGGED IN FOR SUBMISSION.
  10. Entrants’ NAMES SHALL NOT APPEAR ON THE MANUSCRIPT (i.e content of your essay).
  11. Shortlisted entrants will be contacted for the final round INTERACTIVE ASSESSMENT on or before 28th of October, 2024.
  12. Prizes will be awarded as follows: N1,000,000 for 1st place, N700,000 for 2nd place and N500,000 for 3rd place.
  13. All top 10 National Finalists shall each receive a laptop.

There are two sessions offered in 2025:

  • YYAS Online College Prep Workshop: 17 – 22 July 2025 (6 days).
  • YYAS Residential Leadership Summit in Kenya: 9 – 17 August 2025 (9 days).

Participants can choose to attend one session and indicate their preference during the application process.

Summer 2025 Offerings

In 2025, the YYAS will offer two different programmes:

  • Online College Prep Workshop: Conducted virtually for students across Africa.
  • Residential Leadership Summit: Held in Kenya with a focus on leadership and innovation.

Eligibility Requirements for Yale Young African Scholars Program 2024

To apply for the Yale Young African Scholars Program, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Be between 14-18 years old as of 17 July 2025.
  • Have proficiency in English to participate in a rigorous academic curriculum.
  • Be a citizen or permanent resident of an African country. Refugees living in Africa may also apply.
  • Currently attend school in an African country.
  • Be in 10th or 11th grade or the equivalent international level.
  • Must graduate from secondary school between May/June 2026 and May/June 2027 for Northern Hemisphere students, or between November/December 2025 and November/December 2026 for Southern Hemisphere students.

Students in their final year of secondary school or who have graduated are not eligible to apply.

Yale Young Global Scholars (YYGS) Program Details 2024

YYAS College Prep Workshop (Online)

This six-day workshop will admit around 200 students.

Participants must have access to Zoom through their mobile device, tablet, or computer with a reliable internet connection.

The workshop focuses on college preparation and includes strict attendance rules, as students must complete the entire program.

Upon completion, students will receive a YYAS Certificate of Completion, which can be added to university applications.

This workshop is free of charge.

YYAS Residential Leadership Summit (Kenya)

The nine-day Residential Leadership Summit will admit around 100 students and take place at a residential school in Kenya.

The summit covers college preparation, leadership, and 21st-century skills. Like the online workshop, strict attendance rules apply.

All students will receive a YYAS Certificate of Completion upon successfully finishing the program.

This summit is tuition-free, with free housing, meals, and educational materials provided.

Travel Grant

For students accepted to the YYAS Residential Leadership Summit, a limited number of need-based Travel Grants are available.

Students living outside of Kenya may apply for travel support, and all applicants are automatically considered for this grant.

Those who do not qualify for the Travel Grant must arrange their own travel and documentation.

The application process includes two deadlines:

  • Early Action Deadline: 24 October 2024, 11:59 PM ET.
    Decisions released by 20 December 2024.
  • Regular Decision Deadline: 20 January 2025, 11:59 PM ET.
    Decisions released by 20 March 2025.

we are glad to announce that applications are now open for the Yale Young Global Scholars (YYGS) Program 2025. This is a high value prohrame, like many other available scholarships.

This program offers outstanding high school students worldwide a unique academic experience at Yale University.

Participants from over 150 countries, including all 50 U.S. states, join in a two-week session, immersing themselves in an interdisciplinary learning environment on Yale’s historic campus.

Eligibility Requirements for Yale Young Global Scholars Program 2024

To apply for the YYGS Program, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Age: Be between 16-18 years old by July 20, 2025 (Session III start date).
  • English Fluency: Be able to participate in an academic curriculum conducted in English.
  • Grade Level: Be a current high school sophomore or junior (or international equivalent).
  • Graduation Date: Graduate in May/June 2026 or 2027 (Northern Hemisphere) or November/December 2025 or 2026 (Southern Hemisphere).
  • First-Time Participants: You must be a first-time participant in YYGS. Past attendees are not eligible for 2025.

If you applied to YYGS before but were not admitted or could not attend, you may re-apply if you meet the eligibility criteria.

Application Components

YYGS evaluates applications holistically.

Here are the required components:

  • Activities List: Include all extracurricular activities.
  • Essay: One 400-word essay and one 200-word response.
  • Fast Take Responses: Two short answers of 280 characters each.
  • School Transcript: An official copy is required.
  • Recommender: One recommender to complete the YYGS Recommendation Form.
  • Application Fee: $75 USD for Early Action or $90 USD for Regular Decision.

Optional submissions include English fluency test scores (such as TOEFL or DuoLingo) and need-based financial aid.
