UNIBEN has opened applications for both teaching and non-teaching roles. This post covers who can apply, what’s needed, and how to get started. If you’re job-hunting or curious about university work, keep reading.
It’s that time again. UNIBEN has thrown its doors wide open for job seekers, and not just for lecturers or professors. If you’re interested in university work — whether you want to teach, manage admin, or help run the place behind the scenes — there’s likely something here for you.
This latest recruitment drive covers academic and non-academic roles, and the portal’s live. If you’ve been waiting for that chance to join one of Nigeria’s most respected public universities, maybe this is it.
Application Portal and Timeline
Everything runs through the UNIBEN job portal. The entire process is online, so no need to print out anything or carry files from one office to the next. The application stays open for six weeks from the day it was announced, so there’s time — but don’t sleep on it.
Who Can Apply?
This call is open to both internal and external candidates. That means you don’t have to be working in UNIBEN or any university to get a shot.
Let’s break it down.
For Academic Staff: The Teaching Arm
General Qualifications
The short version? You need a Ph.D. Or you should be working on one.
Here’s how it breaks down:
Professor or Associate Professor: A Ph.D. in the relevant field. Long years of teaching, strong research profile, and a good number of published works.
Senior Lecturer: Ph.D. plus 5 years of experience and at least 8 publications.
Lecturer I & II: Ph.D. or Master’s (with extra years of teaching). You need at least 3 publications.
Assistant Lecturer: Master’s degree and proof that your Ph.D. is underway.
Graduate Assistant: Must have finished with a Second Class Upper or better. First Class? Even better. NYSC certificate is a must.
Documents to Upload
A detailed CV with everything from your work history to your hobbies
Credentials (degrees, NYSC, etc.)
Proof of teaching and research work
List of your published papers (in the right order)
Referee contacts (three of them)
Heads up: Referees must send their reports directly to the Registrar, not later than one week after applications close. One of them must know you from your last job.
For Non-Academic Staff: Admin, Health and More
UNIBEN is also looking to fill non-teaching positions, from office assistants to medical officers. These roles come with their own requirements, depending on the level.
Here are a few examples:
Senior Roles
Administrative Assistant (CONTISS 07): Second Class Lower or above, any discipline. Must know how to use a computer.
Confidential Secretary I & II: Strong typing and shorthand skills. You need an HND or ND in Secretarial Studies. Computer knowledge? Non-negotiable.
Medical Staff: For example, pharmacists must have a B.Pharm or Pharm.D and be registered. Nurses should have RN/RM with more training on top.
Medical Lab Technologists: Need a BMLS and valid registration with MLSCN.
Junior Staff Roles
Senior Driver: WAEC or NECO with English and Maths. A valid driver’s license and 4 years behind the wheel.
Clerical Officers: Minimum of five credits including English. Basic computer knowledge helps.
Computer Operators: At least 5 credits in WAEC or NECO, with a certificate in computer operations.
Lab Assistants: Need a national certificate in lab assistance and at least 4 years of relevant work.
Some of the smaller roles don’t ask for degrees, just experience and basic certificates. So if you don’t have a B.Sc., you’re not out of luck.
How to Structure Your CV
They’re pretty specific about what your CV should look like. These are some of the details they want:
Full name (surname underlined)
Job you’re applying for
Date and place of birth
Contact details (phone, email)
Education history (with dates)
Degrees and other qualifications
Work history (dates, positions held)
Professional bodies you’re part of
Community work and hobbies
Referees (full names and addresses)
Keep it neat. Don’t skip anything.
Only shortlisted candidates will hear back
All positions require basic computer literacy
Deadline is six weeks from when the job was posted
Referees must send letters to the Registrar (use the subject line to state your name and the post)
Here’s the thing: a lot of people will apply. Some just to try their luck. If you’re serious, take the application seriously. Get your documents ready. Reach out to your referees on time. And don’t wait till the last week to apply. Nigerian internet can disappoint at the wrong time, no be joke.
