Federal Governemnt of Nigeria FG
Updated: English and Mathematics Compulsory for O’Level -FG

The Federal Ministry of Education has cleared the air about the revised O’Level admission requirements for tertiary education. It confirmed that every student must still register and sit for English Language and Mathematics in their O’Level exams.

The Ministry explained that the new policy does not remove these two subjects but instead introduces a fairer and more flexible admission process. This approach helps ensure that students are not kept out of higher education because of credit issues in subjects that are not linked to their chosen courses.

According to the Honourable Minister of Education, Dr Maruf Tunji Alausa CON, the reform is meant to make the system more inclusive and fair for all learners. He stated that the adjustment supports equal access and creates more learning opportunities for students across Nigeria.

The update aims to modernise the education process in line with international standards. It allows tertiary schools to admit candidates into specific programmes where credit passes in English or Mathematics are not compulsory, while still requiring every student to register and sit for both subjects in their exams.

Dr Alausa added that this change reflects the Federal Government’s plan to promote equal access, fairness, and strong human capital development. By refining admission requirements, the Ministry hopes to remove barriers that prevent capable students from furthering their studies while keeping the quality of education intact.

English and Mathematics remain at the heart of education. These subjects help students build essential skills in communication, problem-solving, and reasoning. Every candidate must continue to take them as part of the Senior School Certificate Examination. The adjustment affects only the admission process for some courses, not the need to study or sit for the subjects themselves.

The Federal Ministry of Education restated its dedication to keeping academic standards high while promoting inclusion and fairness. It will keep working with examination bodies, regulatory agencies, and tertiary schools to make sure the new rules are properly followed.

Students, parents, and educators are advised to rely only on official updates shared through the Federal Ministry of Education’s verified websites and social media pages. This will help prevent confusion caused by false or unofficial information.

The Ministry remains committed to building a trustworthy, inclusive, and globally respected education system that provides equal chances for every learner.

JAMBITE 101
Breaking: JAMB Gives Dealine for Admissions in Tertiary Institutions 2025

At the 2025 Policy Meeting on Admissions held on 18 July 2025, and chaired by the Honourable Minister of Education, Dr Maruf Tunji Alausa CON, key decisions were made on the timelines for the 2025 admission exercise.

According to the resolution, all public universities must complete and forward their lists of qualified candidates who chose them as their first choice to the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) no later than Tuesday, 30 September 2025.

Private universities are expected to submit their admission recommendations by Friday, 31 October 2025. This schedule allows enough time for other tertiary schools, such as polytechnics and colleges of education, to carry out their admissions.

The meeting further agreed that the 2025 admission process would close on the following dates:

  • Public Universities: 31 October 2025
  • Private Universities: 30 November 2025
  • Polytechnics and Colleges of Education: 31 December 2025

These dates are set to promote an organised and consistent academic calendar across all institutions, giving each tier of tertiary education room to manage admissions properly.

JAMB, through the Central Admissions Processing System (CAPS), observed that some schools have yet to submit any admission recommendations, despite the clear instructions and sufficient time given.

It was especially noted that several public universities missed the September deadline. The meeting had directed all institutions to process and archive their admissions even if they were not ready to resume classes, to ensure adherence to the schedule.

As a result, the following universities are urged to begin their 2025 admission processes immediately:

  • Northwest University, Kano (Kano State)
  • Nigeria Police Academy, Wudil (Kano State)
  • Kano State University of Science and Technology, Wudil (Kano State)
  • Benue State University, Makurdi (Benue State)
  • Abdulkadir Kure University, Minna (Niger State)
  • Nigerian Defence Academy, Kaduna (Kaduna State)
  • Emmanuel Alayande University of Education, Oyo (Oyo State)
  • Federal University of Medical and Health Sciences, Funtua (Katsina State)

JAMB has advised these schools to begin their admission activities without further delay.

If any institution fails to comply within the approved period, the Board will automatically move unprocessed candidates to the next available tier of schools for possible placement.

Federal University of Agriculture Abeokuta, FUNAAB
FUNAAB Management Programmes Gets NUC Nod

The National Universities Commission (NUC) has approved the return of Management Degree Programmes at the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB). The decision followed a successful Resource Assessment Visit to the proposed courses.

In a statement released by Mr Olasunkanmi Olajide, Acting Head of the Directorate of Public Relations, the approved courses include B.Sc. AccountingB.Sc. Banking and FinanceB.Sc. Business Administration, and B.Sc. Economics, along with a new postgraduate course, M.Sc. Agroecology.

This approval marks a key step in the university’s academic development. The programmes are returning after being withdrawn in the 2017/2018 academic session, following a Federal Government directive that stopped management-related studies in agricultural universities.

In 2021, FUNAAB’s Senate renamed the College of Management Sciences (COLMAS) to the College of Entrepreneurial and Development Studies (COLENDS) to reflect its broader mission of promoting entrepreneurship and development-focused education.

With the NUC’s approval, the university is set to resume admissions into these management courses under COLENDS for the 2025/2026 Academic Session.

This move strengthens FUNAAB’s commitment to offering students a wider range of academic choices while supporting Nigeria’s drive for skill-based and development-oriented education.
